On September 1st to 2nd 2009, Weathernews (WNI) attended the International Symposium on Ship Design & Construction 2009, in Tokyo.
This symposium was organized by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers, the Japan Institute of Marine Engineering and the Japan Institute of Navigation. Almost 100 people from the shipping industry and universities attended this symposium.
Through this symposium, all attendees addressed the interdisciplinary technologies which are required to produce environmentally friendly ships for the future. Dr. Kazuo Yokokawa, Voyage Planning Team of Weathernews presented Weathernews’ Optimum Ship Routeing Service.
Weathernews presented their approach from the “soft” side: that route optimization by information sharing could bring environmental load reduction, while almost all of the other companies and universities approached their research from the “hard” side.
Once we are trying to face the environmental issues, a higher level of voyage management, which allows not only safety and economy, but also reduces the burden on the environment is essential. Dr. Yokokawa stressed the importance of this higher level of voyage management and WNI’ service, Optimum Ship Routeing (OSR) service.
WNI Optimum Ship Routeing (OSR) service is constructed from routeing technology based on meteorological and vessel performance models, to show operational risks quantitatively, and a communication procedure through which this risk information is shared with both the operators and masters of the vessels. This service leads the vessel’s total optimization.
“The key factor is ‘How do we improve navigation efficiency across the entire shipping fleet.’ Information sharing between all people concerned is one of the necessities of total optimization. We hope that our Optimum Ship Routeing service can realize environmental load reduction through activating information sharing between the people concerned and supporting the total optimization of the entire fleet,” Dr. Yokokawa stated.
Moreover, we need to have a steadfast value as communication service. Though not only weather / current information but also simulation technologies are important, it is also essential for us to know how all of this information is utilized, and how this information can produced satisfied ship masters and operators.
Weathernews continues to improve for the higher service levels for our customer satisfaction.
